For the last couple of weeks we have served coffee in SIWA on Sankarikatu 24.
It has been a great experience. We are learning much about Finnish coffee-drinking culture by just selling our product for a couple of hours on the weekends. It is a privilege to be able to meet Finnish people in such a setting before setting up a larger coffee house.

We realize that there are so many opportunities and worthwhile things to invest into. We would have never started fundraising if it was only about the business. Of course it will hopefully provide for our living and educational expense, but our long-term dream is to make a very specific contribution to the Lapland society.
We desire to address the abortion problem in Kemi. It is the city with the highest abortion rate in Finland. In 2008 almost every 5th pregnancy (18.7%) was aborted in Kemi area, Lapland. We want to serve pregnant women who consider an abortion.
This a multitude of reasons why a woman could think to discontinue the pregnancy. All we want is to care and love the woman and her yet unborn baby.
We desire to support a young woman financially, provide a place to live, help to live through the shame and encourage to keep the child. After the child is born a mother can choose to keep her child. Alternatively, we will work to help find an adopting family, or adopt ourselves. We just want to make an alternative real and attractive.

Something that Andrey was busy with for the past few weeks is publishing the Ph.D. thesis and preparing for viva (or koronka - in Finland). This final phase in thesis work took up much time and made it difficult to focus on Isaiah 43:19 Coffee roastery.
After this coming Friday, however, (September 5th) the work on the thesis and its defence will be complete, Lord willing. When this is done, Andrey will fully focus on setting up the first Coffee roastery in Lapland again.
Meanwhile, we were able to continue the work on the Rostery web-site, working out the details of fund-raising campaign, taking to the local government about upcoming opportunities. We also approach a local university of applied science with the proposal to provide coffee in the place of the recently closed cafeteria at the university premises. The negotiations about the university are on-going. Please pray that we would be given wisdom to know what we can commit to.
We had our first cupping event last week. It was a great experience. People seemed to enjoy the cupping, fellowship and good coffee that followed. Coffee roastery is in our hearts more than ever.

We are working on a new web-site. The new pages will present our work and vision. The web-site will make it easy to order coffee beans and grounded coffee of your choice.

Our motivation for starting a coffee roastery in Kemi is based on a long history of drinking coffee in Finland. Finns have enjoyed coffee and gathered around this drink in coffee-drinking parties since the early 18th century. Finns consume more coffee per person than the people of any other nation, but very few of those who live in Northern Finland and Lapland enjoy the full flavor of freshly roasted coffee. This is because once coffee beans have been roasted, they quickly begin to lose flavour. Within 10 to 12 days the coffee becomes bland. As suprising as it may be, roasted coffee, like milk, is a perishable good. Because of this, our immediate goal is to open the roastery in Kemi. If successful, it will be the first coffee roaster so far North in Scandinavia
